Star Wars’ Next TV Show Brings Back the Coolest Lightsaber Color (With a Twist)

For all the different versions that exist, though, the coolest color, especially from the movies themselves, is Mace Windu’s purple blade. It doesn’t get much cooler than Samuel L. Jackson, after all, who specifically requested the color for his Jedi. Decades later, while Master Windu may not be coming back (though never say never), we are going to see purple lightsabers on-screen again, and this time wielded by two villains. In LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past, the new villain Solitus will use not one but two purple sabers, joined together by a chain. Further, Darth Revan will also appear in the series, bringing his purple weapon with him alongside a red one.

Star Wars Using More Lightsaber Colors Is A Good Thing

It may “just” be a LEGO Star Wars show and thus not officially canon – though that shouldn’t make it any less fun to watch – but it is always great when the franchise embraces the different colors of lightsabers. After the prequels expanded the range and then the old EU ran wild with it, the Star Wars sequels’ lightsabers mostly reverted to the norm. Through the three movies, we only ever see red and blue lightsabers in the present story (even Luke’s green one is missing and only appears in flashbacks), before Rey gets a yellow lightsaber right at the very end of The Rise of Skywalker, which is ignited for about 10 seconds.

The now-canceled The Acolyte was the only recent Star Wars show to fully embrace different lightsaber colors, which was largely due to it taking place at the end of the High Republic era. The imagery of that timeline has typically been filled with various shades and hues for the blades, and that carried over into live-action, which made for some exciting visuals. However, Ahsoka Season 1 also featured villains breaking away from having to use red weapons, as Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati wielded orange lightsabers, hinting they weren’t purely dark side users.

Whether you attribute meaning to the various colors, or they’re just cool visuals (that will also sell merch), it’s certainly interesting to see villains embracing different colored lightsabers, whether that’s purple, orange, or something else. It can help add layers of complexity to them: Mace Windu’s own purple saber can be connected to his inner darkness, which he created a new lightsaber form to help channel; Revan was a Jedi who fell to the dark side and has one of the franchise’s most storied redemption arcs; Baylan Skoll, too, is a fallen Jedi. In all of these cases, the color fits with a greater sense of balance, which could be the case with Solitus as well. Regardless, it’s something that Star Wars’ live-action side should take note of, and will hopefully embrace even more in the future (and hey, if that includes more of Revan too, that’s no bad thing).
