Star Trek: Strange New Worlds May End Sooner Than Fans Thought (& That’s Good News)

In an interview with Screen Rant, Strange New Worlds executive producer Henry Alonso Myers provided an encouraging update on how Season 5 is progressing. “I mean, it’s going very fast. We are right in the middle of it,” he said. “We’re about to start shooting in a week or so.”

Strange New Worlds Ending Sooner Would Be Great for Star Trek

Given the widespread praise Strange New Worlds has received and the high viewership numbers it’s posted, it feels like Paramount shouldn’t be in any rush to wrap the show up. However, there are a lot of benefits to how quickly the last season of Strange New Worlds is coming to fruition. First and foremost, it’s an indication that things are going well behind the scenes and there are no production issues. The creative team has a firm plan in place, and now they’re taking the steps to see it through. Endings can be notoriously tricky to land, but it looks the Strange New Worlds showrunners are confident with what they have.

With Strange New Worlds filming in the very near future, there’s a good chance there won’t be an extended delay between seasons, which would be great news for the audience. In this era of streaming TV, there can be very lengthy gaps for the next season, which can have a negative impact on the fan base. For instance, the prolonged wait for Stranger Things Season 5 has killed enthusiasm some have for the series. These delays can cause a show to lose momentum, but that ideally won’t be an issue for Strange New Worlds. It can hit the home stretch running at a strong pace, captivating the loyal fan base.

Getting things wrapped on Strange New Worlds would also open the creative team to explore other opportunities. Myers has expressed interest in making a Strange New Worlds sequel series that explores an untapped corner of Star Trek history — the early stages of Kirk’s famous five-year mission. Right now, the priority is (understandably) crafting a satisfying conclusion to Strange New Worlds, so once that’s complete, then Myers and Co. can build on Strange New Worlds‘ success by telling another compelling sci-fi story.

Wrapping Strange New Worlds sooner rather than later may also be the preference for studio executives. Star Trek is considered an important property for Paramount following the merger, with the vision of emphasizing a greater sense of unity between the TV and film sides. Instead of there being two separate conversations concerning the two mediums, the idea is to have everything under the same umbrella. As Paramount works on developing new Star Trek movies, it potentially could want TV shows that connect to them and flesh out a shared universe. It will be interesting to see how those plans transpire.
