Resurrection showrunner Phillips appeared on the Dissecting Dexter podcast to talk about the recent season of the show and revealed that the revival is being forced to break the trend of the original show. He was asked about the cadence of future seasons, and while the show could still release annually, it won’t be 12 months to the day between seasons. Phillips noted that the release schedule is ultimately up to Paramount. Still, they will begin writing Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 at the beginning of October and then begin shooting sometime next spring:
“For various reasons I can’t get into, we’re going to be shooting next Summer, we’re going to be shooting starting next Spring. The writer’s room opens October 6th, and we will write through the holidays into early Spring and begin what we call soft prep, meaning we start planning the stages and the sets and locations. Then we begin the casting process and take it from there. We will be shooting next summer, it won’t be airing next summer.”
Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 Won’t Release Next Summer (But It May Not Take Much Longer)
It’s still likely that those waiting for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 may not suffer for too long, at least. For starters, the show is made by TV veterans who crafted the original show every single year for almost a decade straight. The show is also not very VFX heavy, allowing them to shoot things and have a relatively quick turnaround thanks to a more streamlined post-production process. The first season of the show began filming of January and wrapped at the end of June ahead of its premiere in July, which is really impressive for such a big show.
Given that this creative team has been able to quickly move from shooting to releasing a season, it’s possible we’ll see Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 in October or November 2026. The original show historically aired during this window, and both New Blood and Original Sin released in November and December, respectively, so it may be something that Paramount wants people watching when they’re snuggled up inside during the colder months of the year.
Phillips also confirmed that Dexter: Resurrection will have at least three seasons, as he and Michael C. Hall both have a three-year contract. He stated that while they don’t have all the specifics of Season 2 figured out, they have an idea of where things will go and teased a great “big bad” along with smaller weekly villains for Dexter to pick off.
In addition to this news, Phillips also gave his very candid thoughts on Dexter: Original Sin being cancelled. The writer/showrunner expressed displeasure of how the situation was handled in addition to detailing some of the directions they wanted to go with future seasons of the show.
