25 Years Later, This Iconic Series is as Cozy as Ever (And It’s Time for A Rewatch)

Gilmore Girls was a massive success for the WB and later The CW. Itโ€™s been cited as one of the top 100 shows of all time, and weโ€™re not here to dispute that fact. Gilmore Girls revolved around two characters in particular, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel). The mother and daughter pair are famous for talking a mile a minute while navigating their lives and rushing headfirst toward their goals. As such, their series was always equal parts motivating and cozy.

Part of the reason Gilmore Girls has such a cozy vibe is certainly because of the characters and the overall cozier feel to the story. However, it also has a lot to do with Stars Hollow. The story of Gilmore Girls is set in a small town in Connecticut called Stars Hollow. Weโ€™re talking about the kind of small town where everybody knows everybodyโ€™s business, and itโ€™s (mostly) safe to walk down the middle of a street.

Itโ€™s the people of Stars Hollow that really make this town feel alive, and boy, are there some creative characters in this mix. Most fans are probably immediately listing out their favorites: Luke, Miss Patty, Lane, Mrs Kim, Jackson, Sookie, Babette, etc. Let us not forget the quirkiest of the bunch, Kirk!

Stars Hollow is a sleepy backdrop for the series. The town square feels like home, complete with Lukeโ€™s Diner, a picturesque gazebo, and more. Then there are the many festivals of Stars Hollow, giving excuses for our favorite leading ladies to don comfortable sweaters and head outside.

The Love of Coffee, Food, and Books

If thereโ€™s one thing viewers can count on Gilmore Girls to provide, itโ€™s a whole lot of pop culture references. Maybe itโ€™s the coffee that fuels these fast-paced conversations, because there are dozens of different references in each conversation. Everything from modern shows to film, theater, literature, politics, and more.

Lorelai and Rory highlight a particular love of food and coffee; most scenes involving the two of them either have them eating or craving food. Relatable. Their love of all things junk food is balanced out by Emily Gilmoreโ€™s love of all the finer cuisines of the world. Granted, her palette is hardly the central focus of the series.

Where Stars Hollow is a love letter to all things Autumn, Gilmore Girls as a whole is a letter to book lovers everywhere. Rory is a nerdy gal who would be horrified to be left without a book (or ten). Sheโ€™s always dropping the name of a title, and that has motivated many fans to try and read through her massive list of books.

New England Meets Pure Nostalgia

If one could bottle up the 2000s and cram its pure essence into a show, youโ€™d get the Gilmore Girls. This show is pure nostalgia. Even the backgrounds scream of the โ€˜00s, from the landlines to the CDs and decor. Throw in the pop culture references, and youโ€™ll never question when this series was made.

Between the nostalgia and the New England setting, there is something about Gilmore Girls that has always felt like home to many viewers. This is true even for those who have never set foot on the East Coast. Weโ€™d like to think that the Gilmore Girls would have happily accepted their fandom into Stars Hollow, offering a cup of cider and a long-winded tale about which shops to visit.

The fans are the reason Gilmore Girls stayed alive for as long as it did. They carried this series for years, even bringing it back for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life in 2016. While that was only ever meant to be a four-episode season, fans still crave more of this dynamic and lovable duo. Gilmore Girls may be turning 25 years old, but it is still fresh in the minds of many viewers.

Gilmore Girls is available to stream on Hulu, Disney+, and Netflix.
