As part of Pixar’s presentation during the Destination D23 weekend (as reported by Collider), The Incredibles 3 got a small update for its release. But it’s not going to be an update fans would want to see, however, as it’s currently slated for a launch sometime in “2028 or beyond.” That means fans are going to be waiting at minimum three years from the time of this update, and a minimum of four years from its initial announcement. It makes sense for a major animated feature film of this kind, but it’s a bummer nonetheless.
The Incredibles 3 Set for Release in 2028
Disney / Pixar
As part of their presentation during the Destination D23 weekend, Disney/Pixar revealed that both Toy Story 5 and Hoppers were scheduled for a release next year. This would be followed by a new cat themed feature film titled Gatto listed for 2027, and “2028 and beyond” teased both The Incredibles 3 and Coco 2. These films have all been announced within the last year or so, but the longer wait for these follow ups are going to sting for fans who can’t wait to see more.
The Incredibles 3, if it does come out in 2028, will then be launching a decade after the release of The Incredibles 2 in 2018. That’s a minimum too, so fans could be waiting even longer for the third film. Unfortunately, this also means that very little has been revealed about what we could actually expect to see from the new sequel in terms of story, changes to the central family, and more. It’s all still very much a mystery as of the time of this release window update. But at the same time, it is good to get a confirmation that the new sequel is still moving forward.

Although very little concrete information has been revealed as to what to expect from The Incredibles 3, there have been some confirmations about shake ups behind the scenes compared to the first two films. Brad Bird will be writing and executive producing the film alongside Soul’s Dana Murray, but will not be serving as director as seen with the first two films. Instead, The Incredibles 3 will be directed by Elemental’s Peter Sohn. This change did raise some eyebrows from the public, however.
Elemental wasn’t the most successful film upon release, but is one case of word of mouth giving it entirely new life weeks after its debut. It was a modern marvel to see when it hit theaters, so there’s at least a great director at the helm. It might not be entirely in Bird’s hands this time around, but it’s not like fans were completely in love with The Incredibles 2 either. When the third film finally hits, fans will likely be ready to love again.
