Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Gets New Release Date (And Goes Head to Head with Disney)

It turns out there’s good news and bad news regarding Beyond the Spider-Verse. The bad news is that the film is still hitting theaters later than its past release date of June 4th, 2027, but the good news is it has moved up from its latest date, as Deadline is reporting that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is now releasing in theaters on June 18th, 2017, which also happens to be Father’s Day weekend.

A Disney Collision

The other interesting detail about the release date change is that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be colliding with another animated film from Disney and Pixar. Sony’s threequel will now be going up against Pixar’s latest original film, Gatto, which was teased earlier this year.

Gatto is set in Venice, Italy, and follows a black cat named Nero. Nero has started to wonder if he’s lived his 9 lives to the fullest, though he has to figure that out while also trying to stay ahead of a mob boss whom he owes something to. In the midst of all that chaos, Nero meets a street artist named Maya, and the unexpected meeting might just be the key to living his best life.

Now the question becomes whether or not Gatto ends up staying put now that it’s got such big competition. If this were Toy Story 5 or Incredibles 3 there’s no doubt Disney wouldn’t blink (and Spider-Verse would likely not even move into competition in the first place), but Gatto is an original IP, and we are unfortunately coming off of the disappointing box office performance of Elio earlier this year, so it would be understandable if Disney decided to move Gatto to a less crowded space.

The Spider-Verse franchise has performed well at the box office, too, with Into the Spider-Verse delivering $393 million worldwide back in 2018. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse released in 2023, nearly doubled that number with $690 million worldwide. Beyond the Spider-Verse has the potential to surpass that number handily, but we’ll just have to wait and see where it ultimately falls.
