Sonic 4 Reportedly Casts Legendary Actor in Key Role (& Fans Have Ideas on Who They’re Playing)

In the latest edition of his newsletter, industry insider Jeff Sneider noted that none other than Sir Ben Kingsley has been cast in Sonic 4 in what’s only described as “a key role.” Details beyond that are unknown, leave Sonic fans to speculate amongst themselves. Possibilities such as Eggman Nega or the voice of Metal Sonic have been mentioned.

Who Could Ben Kingsley Play in Sonic the Hedgehog 4?

A plot synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is not available yet, but it would appear the film is looking to build off the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 post-credits scene that introduced both Amy Rose and the Metal Sonic threat. What’s notable about these characters is that they debuted in the game Sonic the Hedgehog CD, which prominently features time travel. The implication is that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will be doing its own riff on a time travel story, adapting certain elements of Sonic CD and other titles in the franchise that make use of time travel. Putting those pieces together, this is why some fans believe Kingsley could be playing Eggman Nega.

In the Sonic games, Eggman Nega is a descendant of Dr. Robotnik who similarly has grand plans of world domination. An amusing twist on Eggman Nega is that he has a tremendous amount of disdain for Robotnik, feeling that Robotnik’s failures against Sonic have irrevocably tarnished his family’s reputation. He looks to set things right (from his perspective, at least) by traveling back in time to wreak havoc in the present, believing that is the key for him prospering in the future. If Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is going to include time travel aspects, it would make sense to feature Eggman Nega as a villain.

Sonic 4 could theoretically be about Eggman Nega traveling back to take over the past (Sonic and friends’ future) and fix his family’s future. If this is the case, it will be interesting to see if Paramount is successful in convincing Jim Carrey to return as Dr. Robotnik. Present-day Eggman isn’t necessarily a prerequisite to tell a story about Eggman Nega, but this direction for Sonic 4 would be a lot more fun with Carrey’s involvement. The dynamic between Eggman Nega and his ancestor is compelling and rich, making it great material to explore in a film. One can imagine humorous exchanges as Eggman Nega consistently looks down upon Robotnik for always coming up short. This could also be a way for Sonic and Robotnik to form an uneasy alliance and defend their time from Nega’s invading forces. But again, this is all dependent on Carrey returning, which has not been confirmed yet.

Of course, Sonic mythology is so deep that there’s no shortage of characters Kingsley could portray. The brief yet telling description of “key role,” however, implies the part is significant, and the filmmakers likely wouldn’t have cast someone of Kingsley’s stature for just a small role. In all likelihood, he’s playing a main character, and regardless of who that is, Kingsley should be a great fit. He has unmatched range; his work as Trevor Slattery in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is proof he is more than capable of handling humorous characters in franchise installments, so it should be a treat to see him join the world of Sonic.
