The action film Safe House started streaming on Tubi on August 1, 2025, more than a decade after it was first released in theaters by Universal back in 2012. Directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by David Guggenheim, Safe House stars Reynolds as a young CIA operative in Cape Town, South Africa who is assigned to guard a safe house where legendary rogue agent Tobin Frost (Washington) is brought in. When the safe house is attacked by mercenaries, Weston and Frost must join forces to stay alive and figure out who wants them both dead. Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, Rubén Blades, Nora Arnezeder, and Robert Patrick also star.

Why You Should Watch Safe House

The big draw for Safe House is its lead stars, who both deliver strong performances and have great on-screen chemistry. The contrast between Washington’s slippery and mysterious rogue agent and Reynolds’ naive but determined agent provides for an engaging non-stop, cat-and-mouse dynamic between the two and helps the movie distinguish itself as an anti-buddy movie rather than the usual buddy movie.

Safe House was a commercial success, grossing $208 million worldwide against an $85 million budget, but it wasn’t as well-received by critics. The film was met with mixed reviews and holds a rotten 52% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the film’s script and edits were critiqued. It fared slightly better with audience members, who gave it a 63%. Those ratings aren’t stellar, but with non-stop action sequences, plenty of mystery and intrigue, and numerous plot twists, Safe House is a solid espionage thriller that is sure to keep viewers invested, and it’s a fun watch for both fans of Washington and Reynolds.
