One year after Downey starred in Iron Man, he took on the role of iconic sleuth Sherlock Holmes. He led not one but two Sherlock Holmes movies for director Guy Ritchie, following the 2009 hit with 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and making more than $1 billion at the box office. Movie fans have a ton of love for Downey’s Sherlock Holmes series, and its two existing entries just got a lot easier to watch, thanks to a wave of new additions on Netflix.
Both Sherlock Holmes movies were added to Netflix’s lineup on Monday, September 1st, giving subscribers a couple of action-mysteries to enjoy. With the star-studded casts (Jude Law and Rachel McAdams co-star) and world-famous IP, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Sherlock Holmes titles sit on the Netflix Top 10 Movies list for a while.
Will There Be a Sherlock Holmes 3?
Downey and Law have been attached to a third Sherlock Holmes entry, with Dexter Fletcher taking over behind the camera for Guy Ritchie. Unfortunately, there have been little-to-no updates about the threequel in recent years, and things seem less likely now that Downey has returned to the MCU.
Jared Harris, who played Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes, revealed back in July that there has been nothing happening with the potential third entry, leaving fans discouraged about its future.
While the Sherlock Holmes franchise has been stalled for nearly 15 years, Netflix has been building a detective film series of its own, featuring Sherlock’s younger sister. Millie Bobby Brown has starred in two Enola Holmes films for Netflix, with Henry Cavill taking on the role of her older brother, Sherlock. The pair returned for a third entry in the franchise, which was filmed earlier this year and will release exclusively on Netflix at some point in the future (probably 2026).
