And while the usual suspects in the genre like Disney and Star Wars are all releasing content this month, we’re particularly excited for the works made by some of the industry’s most acclaimed filmmakers, like visionaries Yorgos Lanthimos and Guillermo del Toro.
October 2025 Sci-Fi Movies Will Be a Feast for the Eyes

October 2025 will see the release of three sci-fi films that all have the potential to be awards darlings, as well: Disney’s TRON: Ares, Netflix’s Frankenstein, and Focus Features’ Bugonia.
TRON: Ares resurrects the iconic digital world from the 1982 and 2010 films on October 10th. Jared Leto plays Ares, a highly sophisticated Program sent into the “real world” on a dangerous mission. Leto’s become a controversial figure as of late, but we’re cautiously optimistic about the viability of the film, given its stacked supporting cast. Jeff Bridges is returning as Kevin Flynn, and he’ll be joined by Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, and Jodie Turner-Smith. With that cast and Nine Inch Nails providing the score, we’re hopeful that TRON: Ares will elevate itself above a run-of-the-mill studio tentpole that could perhaps attract some awards attention for its technical achievements, and maybe its music.
Guillermo del Toro’s passion project, Frankenstein, begins a limited theatrical engagement on October 17th before hitting Netflix on November 7th. The film looks to be a return to form for the visionary filmmakers, and the movie has been garnering praise both for its spectacular visuals and nuanced performances on the festival circuit. Critics have been saying that del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s monster masterpiece is one of the most faithful to date, and we’re excited at the prospect of having a modern classic on our hands. Frankenstein demands to be seen in theaters before its Netflix release, to get the full scope of del Toro’s spectacular visuals.
