We now have our first look at the threequel, as the first Minions & Monsters trailer was just released at Super Bowl LX, ahead of the sequel’s July 1 release. The seventh instalment in the lucrative Despicable Me franchise looks set to continue the same brand of slapstick humor and fantastical storytelling. In other words, a solid gold family movie hit. During the game, a spot showed a minion running toward the camera, shouting “minions” and “monster,” as a roar was heard off-screen, and viewers were directed to “Watch the trailer.” Here’s the full trailer:
The Minions Go Hollywood
As often seems to happen, the Minions have finally sold out and gone commercial, as Minions & Monsters sees the iconic yellow morons make their own movie (the titular Minions & Monsters, in fact), which will presumably offer ripe opportunity for meta-humor. The Minions movies obviously tend to include some more adult-oriented humor as a peace offering to the parents and carers who are very much in the theater as chaperones (not all, but most). Their movie is, inevitably, not straightforward as they turn to ancient Eldritch magic to summon real monsters to star in their movie.
Cue some hijinks when they summon a disappointingly cute Cthulhu monster, and a mission to find other, more legitimate monsters. The movie is, once again, directed by Pierre Coffin, who has helmed the entire trilogy. No word yet on whether Steve Carell’s curmudgeony former villain Gru will actually appear.
Fans of the franchise who know the real deep lore will be aware that Minions & Monsters was previously the title of a Minions Mini-Movie that was released exclusively on NBC during an airing of Minions on June 11, 2021. It was then bundled in with the home release of Minions: The Rise of Gru. It has nothing to do with the new movie, other than the title, as it showed some Minions – led by Val – cosplaying on laundry day. Interestingly, it was also the first time in canon that a Minion was shown with blue eyes. Tell your friends.
