Jason Momoa’s New Fast & Furious Update Isn’t What Fans Want to Hear

Videos by ComicBook.com

During an appearance on the podcast Bingeworthy, Momoa was asked what the future holds for his Fast X villain Dante. “I would love to come back and play, man. People all over the world love that character โ€” itโ€™s crazy,” he said. “But I got no script, so not that soon.”

Can Fast X โ€” Part 2 Be Ready for a 2027 Release Date?

Things can change (actors can be among the last people to learn about filming timelines), but Momoa’s comments indicate the start of Fast X โ€” Part 2 production is not imminent. The lack of a finished script would suggest Diesel & Co. are not ready to roll cameras in the near future. It’s true that some Hollywood blockbusters begin shooting without a completed screenplay (Avengers: Doomsday is a recent example), but each project is different. The script seems to be one of the biggest hurdles Fast X โ€” Part 2 needs to overcome; last year, Tyrese Gibson said he had yet to see a script.

This could potentially be an issue for the film. Fast & Furious movies are large-scale productions that take a lot of time to complete. For example, F9 started principal photography in June 2019 and didn’t wrap until November of that year. If Fast X โ€” Part 2 is to hit theaters in 2027, it would be for the best if shooting began sooner rather than later, giving the filmmakers ample time to conduct not just filming, but various post-production responsibilities (visual effect shots, reshoots). Diesel has expressed his desire to take Fast & Furious back to its street racing roots, but even a relatively smaller-scale installment is going to be a complex puzzle to put together.

It’s vital to iron out the logistics of Fast X โ€” Part 2 quickly so Universal can stake claim to a lucrative release window on the 2027 calendar. That year already has a lot of high-profile studio fare on the schedule, including big titles from Universal like an untitled Illumination movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and Shrek 5. The studio has a release date set aside for a mystery movie that holiday season, but all previous Fast & Furious movies came out in the spring or summer, and there’s no way Universal wants to put the franchise finale in the crosshairs of Avengers: Secret Wars. Universal’s running out of prime real estate where Fast X โ€” Part 2 can make a big splash.

Hopefully, the next update fans hear about the film are more encouraging. There’s an argument to be made that the Fast & Furious franchise has run out of gas, meaning it’s better to wrap things up now before interest becomes even more diminished. The filmmakers already missed their chance to have Fast X โ€” Part 2 coincide with the franchise’s 25th anniversary, and prolonging the development of the film any longer will just be frustrating for fans. Perhaps the script will be done by the end of the year, and then Diesel can step on the gas pedal.
