Shyamalan’s 2024 self-funded original movie Trap started streaming on Hulu on September 1st. Its addition to the Disney-owned streaming service puts the film on three streaming services at once, as it is also available to stream on both Netflix and HBO Max. Written, produced, and directed by Shyamalan, the movie stars Josh Hartnett as Cooper, a firefighter and loving father who harbors a dark secret – he is a local serial killer known as The Butcher. When he takes his daughter to a pop concert, he discovers that he’s caught in the middle of an FBI sting operation to catch him. Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Night Shyamalan, Hayley Mills, and Alison Pill also star.
Why You Should Watch Trap
Trap is far from Shyamalan’s highest-grossing or even best movies, but it’s still worthy of a watch. The film grossed $83 million on a $30 million budget and scored a 57% critics’ rating and 64% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Taking a more campy and self-aware tone compared to the serious mood of Shyamalan’s other works, the movie is an entertaining ride that brings Shyamalan’s signature blend of suspense and psychological manipulation to the forefront. Hartnett also leads the movie with a compelling performance of a killer on the verge of being caught, and the film centering itself on the killer’s perspective offers a refreshing take in the horror genre.
