Ryan Reynolds Has Surprising Avengers: Doomsday Update Amid Robert Downey Jr. Feud Reports

While at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote his new documentary John Candy: I Like Me, Reynolds was asked by Entertainment Weekly if there would be any Candy-specific Easter eggs in Avengers: Doomsday after multiple references to the late actor were included in the three Deadpool films. “There’s four that I’ve got in there,” Reynolds jokingly said. “Of course, I’ve written them all at home in my PJs, and nobody’s seen ’em nor have I stepped foot on set. But, yeah, that’s about as far as I’ll go on that one.”

As Avengers: Doomsday makes its way through production, there have been rumors of “dysfunction” on set due to the clashing of various egos and Downey demanding weeks of reshoots. In addition to all that, there was speculation Downey has been feuding with Reynolds — rumors that seemingly stemmed from reports of “a joke gone too far” that rubbed people the wrong way. Without much information to go off of, fans assumed Reynolds could be at the center of the controversy, given his penchant for improvisational humor.

In late August, a report in People stated there was “zero bad blood” between Reynolds and Downey, in part because the two actors have “never met in person.” Though there are industry trade reports indicating Reynolds will appear in Doomsday, Marvel Studios has remained mum on when the actor could return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All Kevin Feige has said is that there have been discussions about what could come next and they’re in touch with Reynolds “a lot.”

Reynolds could just be playing coy in his latest comments; Marvel actors have been known to lie about their involvement in films before (see: Andrew Garfield). Given the MCU’s penchant for secrecy, the franchise’s stars are typically given talking points listing what they can and cannot share in interviews. Though Feige has teased more Doomsday casting announcements are coming, another wave of actors has yet to be revealed. In an effort to preserve any surprises, Reynolds probably isn’t at the liberty to say whether or not Deadpool is in Doomsday. If the Merc with a Mouth is to return, Marvel will reveal that on its own terms.

For fans taking Reynolds’ words at face value, it’s important to keep in mind that Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a complex production that’s been a logistical nightmare for the creative team. Nightcrawler actor Alan Cumming said he filmed his scenes in isolation and doesn’t know which performers he shares scenes with, while Mystique actress Rebecca Romijn isn’t sure if she’s wrapped because the script isn’t complete. So there’s always a chance Reynolds will step foot on the Doomsday set before principal photography is complete. If that happens, he’s bound to get some John Candy references in.
