2024’s Best Horror Movie is Finally Coming to HBO Max (And It’s Soon)

Starting October 10th, HBO Max subscribers will be able to stream The Substance. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, The Substance stars Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a celebrity aerobics instructor who is fired by her chauvinistic boss. When a mysterious, black-market serum promises her a younger, better version of herself, Elisabeth uses it to horrifying consequences. The film also stars Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. The film was both a critical and commercial success and was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Director for Fargeat and Best Actress for Moore.

The Substance Coming to HBO Max Means a New Chance For Audiences to Discover the Hit

The Substance coming to HBO Max in October is huge for the movie. The film was distributed theatrically by MUBI after a buzz-filled festival run, but after that was released on MUBI’s streaming platform and VOD in selected markets before getting a DVD and Blu-ray home release. With The Substance finally coming to a more mainstream platform such as HBO Max, a much wider audience — including those who missed it during its theatrical run and those who did not access it via MUBI — will have chance to finally see what all of the buzz was about.

This could potentially also signal good news for other films. Part of what makes The Substance such an interesting film — beyond the high quality of production and performances — is that it’s a very serious film that is wholly original and was done on a smaller budget but ended up being a serious success. As The Substance continues to succeed and continues to be part of the conversation, especially as we enter into the Halloween season and a month where horror is king, it could prompt studios to give similar films more of a chance, satisfying the audience need for rich, original tales as much as for blockbusters.
