Whether driven by love, duty, or a fundamental difference in philosophy, these individuals chose to defy the Jedi Code; their actions sometimes rippling disastrously through the entire galaxy.
1. Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker’s entire Jedi journey was a struggle against the Code’s core beliefs from day one. He secretly married Padmรฉ Amidala, directly violating perhaps one of the most staunch upheld rules against attachments. This forbidden love caused Anakin nonstop fear and anxiety, as he desperately tried to conceal his secret life from the Jedi Council. His inability to control his emotions coupled with his fear of losing Padmรฉ were what ultimately pushed him over the edge to embrace the dark side.
Anakinโs fall to the dark side wasn’t just about loveโ it was also about his thirst for power and immature impatience. He often used his talents in ways the Jedi would consider reckless, particularly when it came to piloting, and would act on his own without consulting the Council more often than not. He believed his power justified his actions, and his secret life with Padmรฉ led him to make increasingly selfish choices that slowly eroded his already wavering commitment to the Jedi.
2. Qui-Gon Jinn

Qui-Gon Jinn was well-known as a maverick who frequently challenged the Jedi Council’s authority and sometimes, rejected it completely. He believed in following the living Force rather than the Councilโs decrees, which often put him at odds with more orthodox masters. His decision to take in Anakin Skywalker for Jedi training, despite the Council’s outright refusal, speaks not only to his independence, but the fact that the Jedi Council still respected him enough to let him do as he pleased.
He also had a deep attachment to young Anakin, which was in direct conflict with Jedi’s code rule against personal relationships. His willingness to defy his contemporaries and even the Jedi’s ancient rules for what he felt was a greater good and to fulfil the prophecy to bring balance to the Force was his defining characteristic. His nonconformist approach made Qui-gon a unique and controversial figure within the Order.
3. Quinlan Vos

Quinlan Vos was a Jedi Master among his peers for standing out (and not always in a positive way). Quinlan was gifted with a very rare Force talent called psychometry, which is the ability to experience someoneโs memories and feelings by connecting with an object related to them or the person themselves. This power, however, led him down dark and dangerous paths that demanded him to walk the line when it came to the law. His willingness to work with criminals and bounty hunters to get information was met with disapproval by his fellow Jedi, who believed in more straightforward approaches.
His journey brought him dangerously close to the dark side. He even temporarily fell to it while on a mission to assassinate Count Dookuโ a mission sanctioned by the Jedi Council knowing full well of Quinlanโs abilities and history. His method always bordered between the light and dark sides, pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable for a Jedi.
4. Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka Tano made the ultimate break with the Jedi Order by leaving it entirely. After being framed and falsely accused of bombing the Jedi Temple, she was put on trial and was even expelled from the Order. However, Anakin came to her defense and found the real culprit in the nick of time, saving Ahsokaโs reputation and the harsh sentence the Jedi Council was about to hand down to the innocent Padawan. Despite being offered a chance to return to the Order, Ahsoka chose to walk away, having lost her trust in the institution that had raised her, but ultimately betrayed her.
Her decision to abandon the Jedi way and follow what she believed was right was informed by her belief that the Order had lost its wayโa fact that Darth Maul even saw, taunting Ahsoka about the Jediโs coming demise during their epic clash on Mandalore. She realized that the Code’s strict rules and the Council’s blind acceptance of them had become a liability, and she chose a path of her own, becoming a light for many and bettering the galaxy outside of the Order.
5. Kanan Jarrus

Caleb Dume, who took on the name Kanan Jarrus to hide his identity, was a survivor of Order 66. As one of the few Jedi to escape the purge, and after witnessing his master sacrifice herself in order for him to live, Kanan chose to abandon the strict life of a Jedi while still a Padawan. He took on a new identity and eventually allowed himself to form loving attachments with the Ghost crewโmost notably with Hera Syndulla and Ezra Bridger.
