The new report comes the way of Alinea Analytics, who specifically claims that Grounded 2 was the third most downloaded game of August 2025 across Steam and consoles. And considering it’s not on PS5 or Nintendo Switch, this is an impressive feat, if accurate. That said, what is worth noting is that Grounded 2 is on Xbox Game Pass, which means millions can download it for free. To this end, the same report believes about 80% of Grounded 2 players are on Xbox, despite Steam having the larger install base. Xbox Game Pass is, of course, on PC, but it has a much larger install base on Xbox consoles.
If this new report is accurate, it would not be very surprising. When people talk about Obsidian Entertainment’s best game, they often cite Fallout: New Vegas, or perhaps South Park: The Stick of Truth, or even The Outer Worlds. Grounded, from 2022, probably would not get many shouts, despite it being the developer’s most-played game to date. To this end, over 20 million users downloaded the original Grounded. Whether Grounded 2 will recreate this success, we do not know, but we know it had 3 million players a couple of weeks after its release at the end of July. So it’s off to a decent start, but it will need to match Grounded’s longevity to get anywhere near 20 million.
