How to Beat Blue Greymon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger

I’ll admit that when I first faced Blue Greymon, I thought my inability to beat him could be a glitch. As I, and at least a few other players on Reddit, have realized, Blue Greymon has a secret second win condition. That means you can feasibly sit there with his health bar empty, wondering why the battle just won’t end. I know I did. While this can look like a frustrating game-breaking error, it is actually possible to beat Blue Greymon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger.

Why the Blue Greymon Fight Doesn’t End Even When the Health Bar is Empty

Let’s say you, like me, find yourself wondering if the Blue Greymon battle is glitching out. You’ve painstakingly reduced the health bar down to zero, but for some reason, Blue Greymon just keeps attacking. That’s because you haven’t managed to meet the second win condition for this battle, one that the in-game tutorial doesn’t fully explain.

As she battles alongside you, Minervamon warns you that Blue Greymon is building up power for a massive attack. The game tutorial also explains the concept of performing a “charge break” during battle. But what it doesn’t quite convey is that you won’t be able to beat this boss fight unless you break the charge setup.

To do this, you’ll need to send that charge-up line down to zero while fighting Blue Greymon with Minervamno. Only after you’ve broken the charge attack will you be able to win your battle against Blue Greymon. Otherwise, you’ll keep hitting it only to see the HP bar remain frustratingly empty while Blue Greymon fights on.

In my experience, successfully breaking the charge setup is actually more important than reducing Blue Greymon’s HP. Managing to completely deplete the charge bar results in an instant win and the ability to continue your Digimon Story. But to do that, you’re going to need an appropriately leveled team of Digimon. If you have a powerful Cross Art move, it’s also helpful to have this equipped so your Agent can fire on Blue Greymon during the crucial charge break window.

Tips for Training Your Digimon for the Blue Greymon Fight in Time Stranger

One of the reasons I didn’t initially manage to defeat Blue Greymon was an underleveled team. Though I have previously experienced the grind of Digimon training, I was waiting for the game to politely introduce new ways to train my Digipals. But the secret to powering up your ‘mons actually lies within the strange glowing world of the In-Between Theater. You’ll find an entrance to this dimension at various points in the game, including a nearby alley in Shinjuku. It’s here that you can access the Digifarm, where you’ll be able to level up your Digimon’s stats through training exercises.

A pro and a con to the Digimon games is that battles alone often aren’t enough to fully level your team. The grind is great for those who love it, and can be a struggle for newer players or those who prefer more straightforward leveling mechanics. In Balanced mode, walking into the Blue Greymon fight with Digimon that have yet to train at the Digifarm can spell disaster. To be able to deal enough damage to break Blue Greymon’s power-up attack and end the fight, you’ll probably need to train up your team a bit more.

Before taking on Blue Greymon, take some time to put your preferred Digimon team to work in the Digifarm. If your Agent Level is high enough, you could work towards a Digivolution. Or, you can boost attack and defense stats for Digimon that are strong against Blue Greymon. For instance, training up Vaccine-type Digimon will be benefical here, as the Virus-type Blue Greymon is weak to their attacks. Water-type moves will also be more powerful against this boss, helping you more quickly deplete the charge break bar.

You won’t need a massively leveled team to contend with Blue Greymon, but you will need enough Digipower to break the charge meter before Greymon breaks you. Lean into its weaknesses to deal damage more quickly to perform the charge break and keep moving past this early-game boss to your adventures in the Digital World.
