Helldivers 3 Just Became Much More Unlikely

In a recent statement on the official Helldivers 2 Discord server, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani made clear that the studio has “no plans” for Helldivers 3. He said that the current goal is to have Helldivers 2 last for as long as it possibly can and likened it to a game like RuneScape. Given that RuneScape has been running strong for nearly 25 years at this point, it seems apparent that Arrowhead wants Helldivers 2 to be relevant for decades, not just years.

“Myself and the directors agree we would love this to be a forever game,” Jorjani went on to say. “Assuming we get a grip on the performance and dev practices we can keep expanding it for a long time. PlayStation is super supportive.”

Will Helldivers 3 Ever Happen?

Of course, just because Arrowhead currently doesn’t intend to make Helldivers 3 doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen. On a long enough timeline, the player base for Helldivers 2 might begin to shrink, which could prompt Arrowhead to more thoroughly consider developing a sequel as a way of bringing people back to the franchise.

Still, even if this were to happen, it would likely take a very long time for Helldivers 3 to ever see the light of day. Arrowhead’s current comments make it clear that Helldivers 3 is not actively in development at all. Given the lengthy gap between the first Helldivers and Helldivers 2, it’s likely that a potential Helldivers 3 wouldn’t launch until 2030 or later, even if work on the game began soon.

For now, Helldivers 2 remains packed with plenty of content for players to keep themselves busy. Plus, with it now being available on Xbox consoles, millions of new players can look to jump into Helldivers 2 which should only lengthen its lifespan.
