A new blog post on the Age of Empires website documented some of the cool new features coming to โThe Crucible,โ the RTS series’ first official roguelite mode. The mode offers players an intense and customizable challenge, requiring them to survive an onslaught of enemies that come in waves to destroy a wonder. The description of The Crucible revealed that it will be a fully fleshed-out experience, complete with selectable boons, randomized encounters, and persistent progression for players to work towards between each new run. The latest update will be available for both PC and consoles, thanks to the game being released on the Xbox a couple of years back, and soon for PlayStation 5 starting November 4th.
The Crucible Looks Like It Will Add Hours of Fun
All of the right pieces appear to be in place for The Crucible to add an immense amount of replayability for Age fans as they work toward unlocking upgrades and pushing the limits through eight different difficulty settings, as well as a special โconquerors modeโ that only unlocks on the highest difficulties.
Players will be tasked with surviving 45 minutes against an unending onslaught of enemies that gets progressively harder over time. Based on how long the player survives, they can earn medals and perk points, which can be spent on permanent upgrades to improve their future chances. Someone could also choose to stay past the 45-minute time limit in โEndless Mode,โ if they have a really good run that they donโt want to end. While the primary objective will be to protect the wonder, players will also have optional objectives and points of interest to check out that grant various rewards across the four confirmed scenario maps that support The Crucible.
