Here are ten characters who should be a part of the next lineup of the Justice League Dark. Some of these picks have been on the team previously (albeit briefly in some cases) but they added a nice flavor and we’d love to see them back, while others are new faces we think would make a good bit. Whether we will even get another iteration of the team is another matter entirely, but we can dream can’t we?
1) Animal Man

While a brief member previously, Animal Man is too cool not to rejoin the team. If we have Swamp Thing as the representative of the Green, we should have Animal Man for the Red. No stranger to mystical problems thrown his way, Buddy has enough of a weird history along with Constantine and Swamp Thing to fit in. While Animal Man has never been the most popular, just seeing him again could be something interesting just the same. He’s also a character we’ve seen a bit more of on the pages of DC comics recently as it is, so getting him on a proper team would be a great way to expand the character’s reach. He would also just be a good asset to the team: having the animal kingdom at his disposal could come in hand to many magical attacks.
2) Swamp Thing (Levi)

Speaking of Swamp Thing, Levi Kamei is still relatively recent to the mantle of Swamp Thing but it doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a good addition to the team. With Levi not really being utilized too much in DC just yet despite having the Swamp Thing mantle, putting him on any team would do him some justice and give him a chance to shine. He feels like a great character waiting to have his big moment. Plus seeing him with a different dynamic with John Constantine could be fun.
As much as a lot of us miss Alec, it’s honestly time for us to embrace Levi. Sometimes the changes are needed and making him a starting point on the Justice League Dark would be perfect to see for him.
3) The Sandman (Wesley Dodds)

More of a golden age Justice Society guy, newer fans met Dodds in Knight Terrors and his recent mini. A lot of fans don’t think of him first as the Sandman, however, so getting him on Justice League Dark might be a way to really explore him as a character. He is a fascinating one, after all. As a man who makes a sleeping gas and deals with early noir crimes, he’s a character that is easy to get hooked on.
While he returned from the dead in Knight Terrors and was put back to sleep, it wouldn’t be hard to bring him back again. And with Dodds lways feeling a bit mystical as a whole, this semi-living state he exists in would make him the perfect character to walk the line between our world and the world of the dead. Maybe even moreso than Deadman.
4) Zauriel

The “I can’t believe it’s not Hawkman” character, aka Zauriel, was another brief member of the team that would have a perfect place on a new iteration of the Justice League Dark. A literal angel that was actually believed to have been Hawkman (hey, the comparison exists for a reason) at one time would fit on the supernatural team so well. His powers are also pretty complex and interesting, including his immense knowledge of both magic and religion, so he’d be a great asset as well.
As for team dynamics, conversations with him and Deadman could be interesting given their different faiths, throw in Constantine and you could the conversation of a lifetime. A key thing with this team would be that overall dynamic since adding Zauriel would make things pretty specific, but it could net some fascinating stories.
5) The Bride

A bit on the nose given the Creature Commandos show, The Bride would be fun to see as a member of the Justice League Dark. While Frankenstein has been a member before, swapping him for the Bride could be super fun. Acting as another character who walks the line between the living and the dead, she’d fit right in with this team. Plus seeing a character who is so iconic (she is a take on The Bride of Frankenstein after all) with the always iconic Wonder Woman would be insanely cool. Two of the best representations of female characters in comics crossing over would be a dream come true for fans.
